So I know this was posted in the PvP forum, but I wanted to share this with everyone in case people want to mess with their keybingings in attempts to make their gameplay easier.

All of this is found at Taugrim.com, but here is a couple of highlights that could help if you don't want to research. I've included a couple pics, and his video explaining it all.

He suggests that,

"Any keybindings setup should

1. provide the ability to circle-strafe and kite-strafe to keep a target in your facing as much as possible, and
2. enable high fidelity / accuracy for using abilities quickly, and
3. not give you carpal tunnel
As discussed in the video, the setup I have landed on after years of iteration and tweaking is:

~right hand on the mouse for character turn, camera rotation, and forward movement
~left hand for left strafe, right strafe, and all abilities."

Here is the typical default keybinds from your average MMO(these are Rift specific):

Here is how Taugrim suggests you have your keybinds for the left hand, and keeping your right hand on the mouse all about movement.

And finally, here is the video that explainswhy these keybinds are much more logical.

This is something that should be helpful for PvP and PvE. Taugrim suggests that you practice first if you change your bindings, leveling a new character from 1-10 being the easiest way to get used to the new bindings.

Anyway, hope this helps!!!!!

Good Gaming!

Yeah lol you'd have to have auto run enabled on mouse 3 like me and click it on and off. Very annoying. I could only see this being useful in tank and spank raiding.

Watch the video and Taigrim explains it. He says you should never move "backwards" or backpedal. By strafing you never turn your back to someone, and you use the left and right mouse buttons together to run. I also have auto run on mouse button 3. :-)

At that rate - why not just use a joystick. Anyway, nice suggestion, but I think that list of changes to key bindings is a tad ridiculous and unecessary. I leave everything at the default keys and just learn how to play my role without rolling my face on my keyboard, it's not so tough.

Back petalling shouldn't be done, but most abilities you have to be facing your opponent to use. I am a healer, I don't like taking damage, so I will typically back up a few steps, long enough to either stun or slow my PvP opponents (haven't done any Ops yet) and then I get the hell out of there

I dunno, to me these changes just seem wildly unecessary. I may decide to change 2 or 3 bindings for convenience, but not half my keyboard.

Agreed. The only thing I change from the default bindings is make A and D strafe left and right instead of turn left and right. And I set my mouse thumb button 1 to autorun, and thumb button 2 to companion attack.

Other than that, completely stock and I have no issues.

I myself am using a modified version of his guide. And I just got a new Logitech G110 keyboard, so I'll probably modify it a little again. I by no means think this is the only way, or necessarily the end all best way, but I liked the idea of maximizing your key bind layout to be more comfortable for your playstyle.

I do think he has some good tips in the video about movement as well for those who are new pvp or operation mechanics such as kiting. This is just a resource after all.

Anyway, I think the overarching theme we can agree on is don't be afraid to change your keys, but ultimately do whats comfortable to you.

:-)

I've been playing with a Razer Naga mouse and a Razer Nostromo gaming keypad since day 1 and it's a great way to play.

It took me a day or so to tweak all my bindings, but I am able to completely control my toon and all of my actions with the keypad and the mouse, never have to hit the keyboard except for chat.

Its also great if you experience hand and wrist pain when playing with a standard keyboard, which was something that was a major issue for me before I got these peripherals. They create a much better low impact position for the wrist, I am able to basically keep my wrists and hands in a pretty neutral position the entire time I am playing.

I would definitely recommend giving them a try if you have the money to spend.
