I've been waiting to fly my spaceship for a long time. With beta access I was finally able to do that. Now that the NDA is down, I can tell you all about it.

I'm not surprised to hear there is no replay value but i figured the space combat would have been more enjoyable. I still look forward to
playing it.

So totally know what you mean in that. Those games (the X-Wing series) were my fav... and while many folks have mentioned their disappointment in what the space game was like in SWG, I really enjoyed the whole assembling my own ship and trying to get the most from what I had.

I did actually get to try the space combat as well in beta.. and found it somewhat enjoyable. I also found it a little frustrating at the same time though. Not because it was on rails.. but because I really had no idea the controls for said game play. If there was one thing that needed some sort of tutorial text/codex entry on game play mechanics.. it would be the space game.

I think I ran the first mission at least 4 times. Two were during the 11/13th weekend. Where I failed the first time and had to redo it. I suffered from zero sound/music during those two times and was a little saddened by it. Then I heard they fixed it... so I tried the mission again just to see if the fix did affect me too.. and oddly.. failed that mission again and had to redo it. Mostly because I was trying to figure out the missiles and how they worked.

I think it'll pretty much be a "nice distraction" for me from time to time.. or a way to get that last little bit of exp to hit the next level before I move to the next planet for my story arc.

I'm with you though... waiting in line for X-Wing 2.

Though I still haven't gotten to play space combat, I'm still excited, and though maybe x-wing 2 may not come out, maybe the swtor universe will bring another brilliant star fighter into being (no not the ebon hawk). This is sad, I think I was a kid when I played x-wing, though I'm not sure...i don't remember alot of things now, and no I'm not old, just stuff happens sometimes.

Nice article Leo. Glad you enjoyed it even if it was fleeting. I am sorry to say That I did not play X Wing on console/PC but I did play it twice at Disney Quest way back when in the arcade booth. So I wonder would I enjoy it in a non enveloped state. For instance I got board with the podracing game relatively fast but yet I would play the arcade mount of the game when ever I would see it even though its the same game (Actually it was a gimped version of the console game).

Back in the day, my LAN parties in the 90s with multiplayer x-wing vs tie-fighter missions still rank as highpoints in my gaming career...now i just want to have that experience again, but this time with loads of other peeps online (and using today's hardware!).

I really enjoyed JTL (the only reason i subscribed to SWG in fact) and thought they did a great job, I hope they implement something along similar lines further down the road.

btw - in some of the TOR space gameplay videos i've been watching you seem to get xp from killing things and completing missions - is this different to normal xp? (ie, could you in theory level your character purely through space flight? not that i'd want to, just curious)

Ugh....Jump to Lightspeed was the straw that broke the camel's back and made me cancel my SWG subscription.

And yes, you COULD level exclusively in space. The quests for the space missions are repeatable. Plus you get fairly minor amounts of XP for each kill you make in space, but it does add up eventually. A couple of times I've leveled mid-mission.

Jump to Lightspeed is one of those topics where either the fan base loved the expansion... or they absolutely loathed/cancelled over. It brings out polar opposite views in many folks.

Personally I loved it, and I enjoyed the mining aspect when that went in as well. I can understand how some might not like it though, it wasn't for everyone.

Recently in SWG they added the ability to do atmospheric flight over the worlds. You can't interact with the terrain/mobs. But if you are flagged, and come across an opposing faction member who's flagged.. you could fight over the landscape in your ship.

I don't agree. Those that were gone by JTL were gone for other reasons (the CU). JTL itself didn't make anyone leave. I never met anyone in SWG that just didn't like JTL at all.

Except me, you mean. SWG had been going down the toilet for a long time and the only reason I hadn't canceled my subscription was because I was waiting for JTL. It came out and I found the combat boring and the space controlls felt sluggish. So I quit.
