The story I submitted for that contest the MER guys had, in case anyone was interested.
The tale of Darth Animus - Species: Sith Pureblood
My birth name was Vel'nak of the Massassi caste, and my tale begins when I won my first battle. At the age 14, I had been challenged to see who could reach the top of a nearby mountain by another of the Massassi caste named Bizuh. He was slightly shorter than me, but nearly twice as big. Challenges were a daily occurrence on Korriban whether they be feats of strength, cunning, or stamina it did not matter, for I could beat anyone.. Winding through caverns, leaping across fissures, and scaling cliffs were all basic skills that warriors of the Massassi could use. As I neared the peak, I could hear Bizuh below trying to catch up. I noticed a loose rock by my hand and decided to teach him a lesson about challenging me. I unwedged it from the cliff face and dropped it in the direction of him. After all it was just a mere rock, if he could not dodge it, he was too slow for the SIth trials anyways. As the rock descended, bouncing off the cliff face, Bizuh looked up and tried to move out of its way. But as I had suspected, he was too slow, and it hit his arm with resounding force. He screamed in anger as the blood started to flow. When he looked up at me, I could see the hatred in his eyes. Good, maybe now the fight would be more interesting when we reached the peak. Even with one arm injured, it did not slow him as all Purebloods had been trained from brith to ignore pain. I reached the pinnacle a few seconds before Bizuh did, barely enough time to catch my breath. As he climbed up over the ledge, he wasted no time and charged me. I reached out and grabbed his hurt arm as I dodged him and quickly twisted, flipping him onto the ground. He growled, and grabbed a rather large stone as he got up and tried to throw it at me. Had I stayed still, I would have been crushed. I took the opportunity to slide in low and close the distance, causing the stone to overshoot me. I used my knee to hit him in the stomach as hard as I could, knocking out what little air he had left in his lungs. He collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air. As I stood over him, I let out a screaming bellow announcing to the whole planet that a Massassi warrior had been born! I then unsheathed my ritual knife and plunged it into his heart. My family ate well that night, and the next morning I began my trials to become a Sith Warrior.
Two years later, during my trials, I saw one of the Sith masters for the first time. She was tall and imposing for a female. I was too distracted by her to notice my opponent had slipped behind me and he used his elbow to hit the back of my head. I dropped to my hands and knees, dazed, then he kicked me in the face. As he stood over me, confident he had me beat, I used the Force to kick a small whirl wind of dust, which clouded his vision. I got up and rushed toward him, tackling him to the ground. We wrestled around for a moment before I finally twisted around and was able to get his arm between my legs. I pulled as hard as I could and heard a crack as a reward for the effort. One arm down, one to go I had thought to myself. I released my hold and as I stood up, my opponent used the Force and sent me flying back into the arena walls. We both took a while to get up, with my concussion and his broken arm. I realized at that moment that I needed to end this quickly. I ran at my opponent and used the Force, combined with my fist, to punch him in the chest. He went flying back to the opposite wall and did not rise again. I looked back up to the female master and she just glared then turned and left. I thought maybe one day I could challenger her in the ring, what a fight that would be.
When I was 18, after I had won many battles, the female master appeared again. I had heard her last apprentice was killed fighting a Jedi. Only me and 2 others were old enough to become her next apprentice. Of the 3, I was the only one who had actually killed someone. It was not that the other 2 didn't try, they just didn't try hard enough. She approached me but did not say anything, she just stood there. After a few minutes of staring, I told her if she didn't stop that I would tear out her eyes and feed them to a Tuk'ata. Next thing I knew, I awoke inside a kolto tank. She was standing outside the tank, smiling. I didn't remember the fight but I knew from the cut on her cheek that I had come close to winning. After another day, I was released from the tank. Apparently several bones had been broken and I had multiple scars on my body from a lightsaber. I had guessed I didn't come close to winning at all, and that the fight was only the first of many tests. As I walked out of the medical facility, she was waiting for me. She told me her name was Darth Shelaai that I was now her apprentice.
