I think this is the way forward. Not an admission of failure, but simply a common sense adaptation to the 'new normal' of how people are paying for their gaming nowadays. It will be interesting to see how the financial numbers stack up over the next few quarters, but one thing is certain - there will be a lot more players in game, which has to be a good thing.

All I know is that back in the day when DDO was the first big name for-pay game to change over to F2P they were basically dead. The F2P move was like a hail mary attempt to salvage a little bit of business. But after they did it, they were making more money than they ever had had a subscription based game.

F2P is perfect now for attention deficit players. No one wants to fork over a $60 chunk but they'll buy 12 thing as $5 without batting an eye. Hope they just lock new character classes but kinda thinking they'll have 1 of each advanced class for free and then make you pay to unlock the other. Least that's what I'd do.

I played a little LOTRO before SWTOR launched with the intention of not spending a dime. I ended up spending more than I currently spend on my SWTOR monthly subscription.
And I didn't even like that game that much. So I think that this F2P move will be good for Bioware's bottom line, which will mean more reinvestment in the game, which is good for all of us.

I will definitely be reinstalling the game when it goes FTP, but about the only times I will log on is to hang out with you guys at one of the events. 8-)
