I wish I could play more but classes every day of the week until like 2 and then work from 530 to 1130 most days doesn’t help me out much. Eventually though all this work will hopefully put me in a position to buy all the games I want! MUHAHAHAHAHAH!

I just checked out my xfire page to see how many hours I had played this week along. 32 hours. That sad I think. Very very sad. Oh well.

  3. On January 12, 2010 Slartibartfast says:

I play at least 25 hours a week of games, some call it sad but I really haven’t had anything else to do and gaming is something that I thoroughly enjoy between writing and studying so by me it’s alright!

    Cheers!

PS: I like the picture! What Dreamhack is it from? I’ve been around to the festival three times and I heartily recommend it. Living in the States however limits it a bit, I mean it’s perfectly understandable if you won’t travel over to Europe to attend a Dreamhack. If you’re ever around in time for one, go there!

Thanks to everybody so far for the feedback. We’ve got a much larger number of “hardcore” players than I thought! I just checked my Steam profile…and it looks like I’m just barely hitting 15 hours over the past two weeks. But I have a pretty good feeling that’s going to ramp up here soon…really digging the Global Agenda beta so far.

@Slart I actually just googled LAN party and set the color filter to black, and that was one of the first images to pop up! A LAN that huge would probably blow my mind. I can’t even imagine the logistics nightmare something like that would be. Still though, looks pretty epic.

I normally fall into the Moderate category getting, on average, more than 2 hours of game play in a day. This of course changes with homework, road travel, or other socializing. However, recently, with non of that being an issue I have definitely stepped into the Hardcore realm of gaming. After a month hiatus from Dragon Age I have returned with a vengeance: clocking in over 10 hours in the last two days, and more to come.
So, if Bioware can draw me into ToR the same way they did for me in Dragon Age, I will certainly get my money’s worth.

I know when the East Coast was buried under a couple feet of snow, I probably racked up 80+ hours of gaming that week. My playtime varies based on what’s out at the time, and with Mass Effect 2 coming out in a couple weeks it will probably go back up.

  7. On January 13, 2010 Ben Nighthawk says:

I guess I am one of the few that play 5 or less a week.

  8. On January 15, 2010 Kim says:

I’m a casual player that plays 40 or more hours a week. I don’t think casual is a time related alone, I think its a play style. Hardcore are raiders and all the players pushing to get the best items. Casual, which is my playstyle, doesn’t care about having the best and would rather spend the time exploring and dungeon crawling with a smaller group of friends or socializing in the local tavern.

I don’t raid period. I hate it. So I think I am a casual player. Just because I play over 40 hours doesn’t make me hardcore at all. So what do you guys say to that?

  9. On January 15, 2010 Zach says:

Kim I know what you mean. While you don’t want to be wrapped up with all the negative stereo types of a “hardcore” gamer, you do admit that gaming is something that is a big chuck of your life. I personally don’t see anything wrong with that. Its a hobble, mind exercise or way to even be social with others. I think for purposes of the poll we just want to see how much time do you spend playing games and not “how much do you PwnStomp teh N00bzerz”.

    Mmmmmmmm….Pwnage!

  11. On January 17, 2010 Kim says:

The problem is all of the polls lump hardcore versus casual the same way. As a time issue. I’m just inputting its not always the case. Sometimes its a play style issue or even a lazy issue, or a lack of fun issue, but I don’t see where time has anything to do with a style. Just my thought.

  12. On January 17, 2010 Kim says:

I should have said the whole thing has become a stereotype.

  13. On January 18, 2010 FourStoryGamer says:

Kim, you can’t deny that someone playing over 40 hours of video games a week is considerably a more hardcore player than someone who plays for 2 hours a week, even if they have a casual or more socially focused play style.

Your play style sounds much like my own and I think we are a part of the casual hardcore (if we have to attach labels that in the end of the day don’t need a label except for polls like this). The purely casual player would be my mom playing Chuzzle or Plants vs. Zombies (and yes, my mom does play PvZ) a few hours every week.

In the end though, it’s just a poll and no one is really passing any substantial judgment on anyone else.
